UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Tuesday plans to increase defence spending to blank”>2.5% of GDP by 2027. This marks a rise from the current 2.3% and aims to strengthen national security amid global tensions. The increase will be partially funded by reducing the UK’s foreign aid budget from 0.5% to 0.3% of GDP.
Starmer’s announcement comes ahead of his scheduled meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington. Their discussions are expected to focus on bolstering European security and maintaining support for Ukraine.
Framing the decision as essential, Starmer stated:
It is my first duty as Prime Minister to keep our country safe. In an ever more dangerous world, increasing the resilience of our country so we can protect the British people, resist future shocks and bolster British interests, is vital.
He argued that national security and economic growth are interconnected, adding:
By spending more on defence, we will deliver the stability that underpins economic growth, and will unlock prosperity through new jobs, skills and opportunity across the country.
The decision aligns with U.S. President Trump’s call for allies to contribute more to defence spending.
With the UK government prioritizing security over foreign aid, the question remains whether this approach will achieve the promised economic and geopolitical stability or signify a shift away from Britain’s traditional role as a leader in international development.
