Ljubljana – Slovenia firmly opposes any attempts to alter borders through force, stated Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon in response to newly elected US President Donald Trump’s threats of a military takeover of the Panama Canal and Greenland. She noted that, for the moment, these are mere words, but the implications of such aggressive rhetoric are troubling.
“Slovenia stands against any alteration of internationally recognized borders, whether through military means or coercion,” Fajon declared. She raised concerns that Trump’s remarks reflect a potentially aggressive foreign policy and have sparked significant unease amidst a global climate of disregard for the rule of law, international law, and the principles outlined in the UN Charter.
Fajon pointed out that the immediate responses from Denmark and its autonomous territory, Greenland, indicate a desire for Greenland to pursue its own path. She reminded observers that this is not the first time the US has shown interest in Greenland, particularly due to its natural resources, while emphasizing that it remains part of EU and NATO territory.
“Any signs of aggressive annexation would be deeply alarming,” she remarked.
She also cautioned that the world is becoming increasingly unpredictable, presenting significant challenges for smaller nations. From Slovenia’s perspective, it is essential to reinforce the institutions it is part of and to promote international law, the UN Charter, and the efficacy of multilateralism.
