European leaders expressed their steadfast support for Ukraine on the 1,000th day of Russia’s invasion, reflecting on the country’s resilience and the sacrifices made by its people.
“Russia tried to wipe Ukraine off the map, and for 1,000 days Russia has failed because of Ukraine’s resistance and the sacrifice of your heroes,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.
To mark the solemn occasion, a Ukrainian flag was raised in front of the European Commission headquarters in Brussels, and various EU leaders conveyed messages of solidarity.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell stated on X (formerly Twitter) that one of his most important responsibilities has been rallying European support for Ukraine. However, he acknowledged that Europe needs to act faster and do more to assist Kyiv. “History will judge us by our actions and our reactions,” Borrell added.
Kaja Kallas, Borrell’s incoming successor as the EU’s top diplomat, also shared her thoughts on X, expressing that “each day is one too many” of the war but praising the “unparalleled bravery and resilience” of Ukrainians. “Europe’s support for Ukraine is unwavering. We will continue to help Ukraine and rebuild its future,” Kallas affirmed.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk echoed these sentiments, recalling both Ukrainian heroism and Poland’s enduring aid and solidarity. He emphasized that by supporting Ukraine, Poland and Europe are keeping the conflict at a distance from their own borders. “Let us remember that every single day,” Tusk urged.
These statements underscored Europe’s collective commitment to Ukraine and reinforced the resolve to continue supporting the country through its hardships.
