4-Armed Da Vinci Xi Robot Assists Lier Surgeons

Lier (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Heilig-Hartziekenhuis in Lier uses the Da Vinci Xi robot, led by surgeon Pieter-Jan Vancoillie, for precise surgeries in urology, gynaecology, and abdominal fields, improving recovery and safety.

The Heilig-Hartziekenhuis in the Belgian city of Lier, province of Antwerp, introduced the new Da Vinci Xi robot to assist surgeons during operations, as reported by VRT News. The advanced machine works with 4 robotic arms that carry out surgery via small incisions. Authorities added that patients tend to have reduced bleeding, fewer infections, and heal faster. Surgeons use a special console to operate the robot.

How is the new Da Vinci Xi robot improving surgeries at Heilig-Hartziekenhuis Lier?

Surgeon Pieter-Jan Vancoillie explains that the new Da Vinci Xi robot helps both patients and doctors. He mentioned that for doctors, the robot makes work easier and more comfortable. It gives them a clear, steady 3D view of the area they operate in. The robot improves results and makes surgery safer for everyone.

At the Heilig-Hartziekenhuis, the abdominal surgery, urology, and gynaecology departments are already utilising the Da Vinci Xi robot in their procedures. Authorities stated that the robot is particularly useful for uterine and prostate surgery.

The application of the robot resulted in quicker recovery and fewer complications after surgery. A couple of years ago, the University Hospital in Ghent also began utilising a surgical robot similar to the Da Vinci Xi. The robot-assisted surgeons in conducting complicated operations with minimal incisions, thus rendering surgery safer for patients.
