UNRWA Chief Warns of Worsening Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), has raised concerns about the ongoing siege in Gaza, warning that the blockade is exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation.
In a post on social media, Lazzarini highlighted that the current restrictions, which prevent essential supplies such as food, medicine, water, and fuel from entering Gaza, have lasted longer than previous blockades imposed during the initial phase of the conflict.
He emphasized that Gaza’s population is heavily reliant on imports from Israel for their basic survival. “Every day that passes without aid means more children go to bed hungry, diseases spread, and suffering deepens,” he stated, cautioning that the region is edging closer to a severe hunger crisis.
Mounting Casualties in the Ongoing War
The latest escalation of violence erupted following Hamas-led attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, in which 1,195 people were killed, and over 250 taken hostage. In response, Israel launched extensive military operations in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least 50,000 Palestinians.
After a temporary ceasefire allowed for the exchange of some hostages and Palestinian prisoners, Israel resumed its bombing campaign and ground invasion. Since then, hundreds of civilians, including many children, have lost their lives.
Dire Consequences If Ceasefire Is Not Restored
Sam Rose, UNRWA’s Acting Director of Affairs in Gaza, issued an urgent warning on Friday, stating that a failure to reinstate the ceasefire would lead to “large-scale loss of life, destruction of infrastructure, heightened risk of infectious diseases, and immense trauma for the one million children and two million civilians living in Gaza.”
Calls to End the Siege and Provide Unhindered Aid
Lazzarini described the ongoing blockade as “collective punishment” targeting Gaza’s civilian population, the majority of whom are women, children, and ordinary citizens. He urged for an immediate lifting of the restrictions, demanding that Hamas release the remaining hostages and that the flow of humanitarian aid and commercial goods into Gaza be restored without interruption and on a large scale.
