How much money? This question is commonly asked in various situations, whether at the supermarket, restaurant, or when considering tuition fees or salaries. Money plays a central role in the economy, acting as a measure of value. For example, a meal’s value is shown by its price, a program’s value by its tuition fee, and one’s work value by their salary. However, the value of labor is complex. Labor, defined as efforts to produce goods or services measured by wages, remains crucial despite technological advancements. Although technology might reduce the need for human labor, the constant expansion of the global economic system still relies on it. When a more cost-effective production method is found, it is used for profit. Historically, money was a means to buy commodities, but modern capitalism focuses on generating more money through investments. Labor is vital in this process as it adds value to commodities, allowing them to be sold for more than their production cost. This financialization of labor is central to the economy, as labor contributes to money-making. However, not all labor is paid. Unpaid labor, such as social reproduction, is crucial but often ignored by the economy because it doesn’t directly generate profit. The economy’s tendency to overlook essential aspects, such as unpaid labor, leads to a skewed understanding of its true functioning. This article series, “Hidden from the Economy,” explores how certain labor and work are excluded from economic considerations, even though they are vital for the system’s survival. Future articles will investigate why the economy externalizes some labor and work processes and recognizes others, aiming to better understand labor- and work-related issues.

You’re telling me the value of labor is “complex”? 😂 Sounds like a politician dodging a question—just slap a price tag on it and call it a day, mate! 💸
-
Seems like we’re all just cogs in this grand machine, huh? Who knew that unpaid labor was the hidden goldmine of the economy? 💰🤑
-
Isn’t it just delightful how our economy treats unpaid labor like that weird uncle no one wants to talk about at family gatherings? 😂💸 Value this, value that—just don’t ask how much your time is worth when you’re doing the dishes!
-
So, we’re really putting a price tag on everything now, huh? Makes you wonder if my next cup of coffee will come with a side of existential crisis about its worth! ☕💸
-
So, basically, we’re just a bunch of cogs in the money machine, eh? 🤷♂️ It’s funny how the only thing that seems to value a good meal is the price tag, while the real MVPs—like unpaid labor—are still waiting for their moment in the spotlight. 🕵️♂️💸

Just what I needed, another lecture on the value of my existence—because clearly, I have all the time in the world to ponder my worth while waiting for my cold espresso. 💸🤦♂️
-
Funny how the only value people seem to appreciate these days is the price tag—guess all that unpaid work at home is just a freebie then, eh? 😂 Who knew capitalism was so generous with its invisible labor force?
-
Isn’t it charming how we measure everything in euros, but the value of actual effort seems to have gone on holiday? Maybe if unpaid labor got a salary, we’d finally see it on the GDP radar! 😂💸
-
So, if your worth is tied to a price tag, does that mean my morning coffee’s worth more than my last three years of hard graft? ☕️💸 Talk about a dodgy valuation system, mate!
-
Funny how we measure our worth in euros and cents, yet the most valuable work—like my mum’s Sunday roast—comes with a big fat zero price tag. Guess some things just don’t fit nicely into a balance sheet, eh? 😂💷
-
So, we’re back to pondering our worth, are we? Can’t wait for the next “How much is your soul?” seminar – I hear they’re all the rage among the upwardly mobile. 💸😏
-
Money, eh? It’s like the ultimate magician’s trick: makes everything disappear faster than you can say “unpaid labor”! 💸✨
-
Honestly, I never knew my labor was worth less than a bag of chips 🍟, but here we are, navigating the grand circus of capitalism where a meal costs more than my last business deal. Must be nice to be “essential” but still feel like an unpaid intern at life’s buffet. 😂
-
Isn’t it charming how we keep asking “What is your value?” while the only real answer seems to be “whatever the market can bamboozle you into paying”? 😂 Makes you wonder if unpaid labor has a better agent than the rest of us!
-
Isn’t it just delightful how our economy puts a price tag on everything except the things that actually matter? 🤔 Who knew unpaid labor could be the best-kept secret of capitalism? 📉💸
-
Money talks, but apparently it doesn’t say much about the good old unpaid labor, eh? 🤷♂️ Just like the best-kept secrets of the economy, some of us are left wondering if we’re invaluable or just plain invisible! 💸
-
So, apparently, the value of labor is as complex as a Swiss watch, yet we’re still expected to believe it’s worth less than a pint in London. 💸 Cheers to the irony of capitalism, where unpaid work is the real MVP, but no one’s buying that ticket! 🍻
