During a White House event on Friday, Trump stated to reporters, “We are going to do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not, because if we don’t do it, Russia or China will take over Greenland, and we’re not going to have Russia or China as a neighbor.”
He expressed a preference for making a deal in an easy manner but noted that if necessary, they would “do it the hard way.”
In response, Greenlandic leaders reiterated their desire to handle their own affairs. They stated, “We would like to emphasize once again our desire for the U.S.’s disdain for our country to end,” asserting that the future of Greenland should be determined by its people.
The leaders highlighted their increased “international participation” in recent years and called for continued dialogue based on diplomacy and international principles.
They also mentioned that the meeting of Greenland’s parliament, the Inatsisartut, would be brought forward to ensure a fair political debate and secure the rights of their people.
According to officials and experts, taking over Greenland would be relatively simple, though Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned it could spell the end of NATO.
Earlier this week, eight of Europe’s top leaders backed Greenland, emphasizing that Arctic security must be achieved collectively with respect for the wishes of its inhabitants.
