At this stage, the vote is mostly symbolic, as the majority of political groups have indicated their opposition to the no-confidence motion. However, it highlights growing discontent with her in Brussels following a series of controversial actions and scandals.
If the motion passes, it would result in the resignation of the entire Commission and initiate the complex process of appointing 27 new European commissioners.
Political turmoil
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola informed political group leaders about the scheduling on Wednesday evening.
The debate is set for Monday, during which von der Leyen will make an appearance, followed by a discussion where political group leaders will share their perspectives.
Romanian right-wing lawmaker Gheorghe Piperea initiated the motion of censure after securing enough signatures last week in protest of her secret 2021 texts with Albert Bourla, the CEO of Pfizer. These texts pertained to discussions about obtaining vaccines for Europe during the peak of the coronavirus pandemic.
While some members of von der Leyen’s European People’s Party and the right-wing ECR have withdrawn their support for the motion due to internal pressure, it still achieved the 72 signatures necessary to proceed.
Despite recent political turmoil, with Socialists and liberals accusing von der Leyen of aligning with the far right to weaken green reforms, the EU’s centrist majority, which backed her presidency, is unlikely to support the move.
