Von der Leyen, Merz: Constructive Talks with Belgium on Russian Assets

Merz expressed similar concerns in German media, stating that Belgium’s issue with managing frozen Russian assets is significant and must be solved in a way that equalizes risk across European states. De Wever did not comment, and there were no signs of an agreement with the Belgian premier. Most assets are managed by the Brussels-based financial depository, Euroclear. De Wever is concerned about Russian retaliation against Belgium and seeks strong financial assurances from EU capitals before supporting the Commission’s proposal. Although the Commission has minimized Belgium’s legal risks, they need De Wever’s backing to proceed. Diplomats are reviewing the legal text to address Belgian concerns before the EU summit in Brussels on December 18. An alternative plan to use joint debt for Ukraine is unlikely after Budapest rejected it in a recent ambassadors’ meeting. Kyiv is expected to run out of funding for its war efforts early next year.

So, we’re having “constructive talks” about frozen Russian assets, eh? Sounds like a classic European game of “pass the hot potato” – just hope nobody gets burned! 😏💼

Oh, brilliant! Just what we needed—Belgium playing financial chess with Russian assets while the rest of us are still figuring out checkers. Who knew frozen funds could be so spicy? 😏💸

Just what we needed, more “constructive talks” while Belgium plays financial hopscotch with Russian assets. 😏 Can’t wait to see how this turns out—like watching paint dry, but with a side of bureaucratic flair! 🇪🇺💼

Just another day of high-stakes poker with frozen assets – who knew Belgium would be the one sweating bullets? 🥴 Let’s hope they don’t need a loan from Luxembourg to buy a clue!

Seems like Belgium’s got its hands full—managing frozen Russian assets might need a bit more than just a cuppa and a chat. 🍵 What’s next, a bake sale to fund the legal fees? 😂

Isn’t it charming how our European leaders are having a riveting chat over frozen Russian assets while the rest of us are just trying to keep the heating on this winter? 😂 Let’s just hope they don’t end up with more legal jargon than actual solutions. 🥴

Oh, brilliant! Who knew managing frozen Russian assets would turn into a high-stakes game of diplomatic chess? It’s almost as if Belgium is trying to win a gold medal in the ‘Risk Aversion Olympics’ while the rest of us just want to move on with our lives. 😂

Just what we needed, more talks and less action! It’s like watching a bunch of bureaucrats trying to find the light switch in a blackout—bravo, chaps! 😏
