Von der Leyen Evades Censorship and Offers Reassurance

European Parliament (Strasbourg, France) – In a plenary session in Strasbourg, MEPs have decisively rejected two motions of censure against the President of the European Commission, one proposed by the far right and the other by the radical left.

The first motion, introduced by The Patriots for Europe (Pfe), led by Frenchman Jordan Bardella, garnered 179 votes in favor, 378 against, and 37 abstentions.

Notably, four right-wing MEPs from France, including François-Xavier Bellamy, vice-president of the Republicans, aligned their votes with the far right, making them the only members of the European People’s Party (EPP) to do so.

In a statement to AFP, François-Xavier Bellamy indicated that his vote was a protest against the free trade agreement with Mercosur.

The second motion, introduced by the La Gauche group co-chaired by Frenchwoman Manon Aubry, received 133 votes in favor, 383 against, and 78 abstentions.

Following these outcomes, which surpassed the expectations of the executive, Ursula von der Leyen expressed her satisfaction with the “strong support” from the Parliament in a message on social media platform X. (October 9, 2025)

Just another day in Strasbourg where the “hard-hitting” decisions of our MEPs remind us that democracy is just a fancy word for “let’s all hold hands and disagree.” Bravo to von der Leyen for dodging those motions like a pro! 🙄💼
