Strasbourg – Owners of classic and muscle cars can relax as new EU regulations will not mandate scrapping these vehicles.
The European Commission’s proposal on managing older cars has sparked debate for several years, with concerns previously raised about potential scrapping requirements.
However, that concern has been alleviated as both the European Parliament and EU member states have reached a consensus on the proposal. They both support the conservation of what is termed “vehicles of particular cultural interest” within EU discussions.
Swedish member Johan Danielsson (Social Democrats) expressed satisfaction but cautioned about the final negotiations with EU member states.
“If the member states get their way, an adult who owns a restoration project will need to submit a restoration plan proving they have the financial means and technical skills to complete it. This plan must then be approved by an ‘independent vehicle expert.’ They are creating an administrative nightmare and it is absurd,” Danielsson stated at a press conference in Strasbourg.
