US aid cuts will make the world ‘less healthy, less safe, and less prosperous,’ says Guterres.

UN Chief Warns US Aid Cuts Will Weaken Global Stability and Humanitarian Efforts

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has sounded the alarm over recent cuts to US foreign aid, emphasizing that they will disrupt a broad range of critical humanitarian and security initiatives worldwide. Speaking at UN Headquarters in New York, Guterres highlighted the potential consequences, including setbacks in lifesaving humanitarian operations, development projects, counterterrorism efforts, and anti-drug trafficking programs.

The Impact on Global Aid

Guterres acknowledged the United States’ longstanding role as a leader in international aid. He expressed gratitude for the generosity of US taxpayers, noting that their contributions—along with those of other donors—help deliver humanitarian assistance to more than 100 million people annually.

However, he warned that the reduction in funding comes at a time of escalating global crises, leaving millions vulnerable to hunger, disease, and displacement.

**“The consequences will be especially devastating for vulnerable people around the world,”** he stated.

Millions in Danger

The aid cuts are already having dire effects in multiple crisis-hit regions.

– In Afghanistan, more than nine million people risk losing access to essential health and protection services as mobile health units and other critical programs face suspension.
– In northeastern Syria, where 2.5 million depend on humanitarian relief, the absence of US funding is expected to deeply impact aid operations.
– In Ukraine, cash-based assistance that supported one million people in 2024 has been halted.
– In South Sudan, aid shortages have led to overcrowded and unsanitary conditions at refugee camps, as funding to support those fleeing violence in Sudan has dried up.

Beyond immediate humanitarian relief, the cuts also threaten global health and security efforts. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) will be forced to scale back counter-narcotics operations, particularly those targeting fentanyl trafficking and human smuggling. Additionally, funding for key disease combat programs—including efforts to fight HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and cholera—has stopped.

The Importance of US Support

Guterres reiterated that American contributions have played a crucial role in maintaining global stability and humanitarian efforts.

**“The generosity and compassion of the American people have not only saved lives, built peace, and improved the world. They have also contributed to the stability and prosperity that Americans themselves depend on,”** he said.

A Call to Reconsider

The Secretary-General urged the US Government to rethink its decision, underscoring that reducing humanitarian support would have far-reaching consequences—not only for those in crisis but also for overall global security.

**“Going through with these cuts will make the world less healthy, less safe, and less prosperous,”** he warned.

Guterres reaffirmed that UN agencies stand ready to provide justification for their projects and to work closely with US officials to address any concerns.

**“We look forward to continuing our partnership with the United States,”** he said, adding that the UN remains committed to securing diverse funding sources to sustain its critical humanitarian work.

Despite the financial challenges, Guterres pledged that the UN would do everything possible to continue delivering lifesaving aid efficiently and transparently.

**“Our absolute priority remains clear: we will do everything in our power to provide urgent assistance to those in need. We are committed to ensuring that global humanitarian efforts remain as effective, accountable, and innovative as possible—while continuing to save lives,”** he concluded.
