Von der Leyen will fly to Australia directly after attending the Munich Security Conference in Germany from February 13-15, as reported by Australian digital newspaper The Nightly, which revealed details of the Commission chief’s four-day visit.
In December, EU countries permitted the Commission to negotiate a defense deal with Australia. Reaching such a deal would follow security and defense agreements signed with the U.K., Canada, and India.
An agreement with Australia would be advantageous for the EU, offering access to the country’s substantial reserves of strategic minerals, including the world’s largest lithium production and second-largest copper reserves.
Following the contentious EU-Mercosur deal with South American countries, criticized by farmers, France, and skeptical lawmakers, the pact with Canberra is anticipated to provoke some opposition due to its significant agricultural component.
