Two North Korean soldiers, who were wounded, are now receiving “necessary medical assistance,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced in a recent Telegram post. The men are currently held in custody by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in Kyiv, he added.
In a separate Telegram statement, the SBU emphasized that the captured soldiers serve as “irrefutable evidence” of North Korea’s involvement in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The SBU explained that “the prisoners do not speak Ukrainian, English, or Russian,” requiring the use of Korean translators to communicate. This process has been handled in collaboration with South Korean officials.
President Zelenskyy also highlighted the challenges of capturing the North Korean soldiers, noting in an additional post that the mission was far from straightforward. “This task was not an easy one,” he said. “It is common practice for Russians and other North Korean soldiers to eliminate their wounded and destroy evidence of North Korea’s participation in the war against Ukraine.”
