A ‘Super Tuesday’ for an Expanded EU

Ireland is prioritizing enlargement during its presidency of the EU Council, actively advancing accession discussions. Today, alongside the EU’s General Affairs Council, four separate accession conferences will be held for Ukraine, Moldova, Albania, and Montenegro, marking significant progress in their membership pursuits. Ireland’s Europe Minister Thomas Byrne noted this is the highest number of accession meetings on a single day since 2002.

Additionally, the European Commission is embarking on its first major workplace reforms in 20 years. Piotr Serafin, the commissioner for human resources, introduced initial reforms on Monday, though not everyone agrees with the EU executive’s approach.

Furthermore, a new European Commission Joint Research Centre report released today highlights demographic challenges, revealing that a baby born in the EU can expect to live to about 81.5 years.
