UK Tech Secretary Hosted by Sam Altman on a Budget

Two weeks before meeting with Altman, Kyle told a California AI industry conference that the U.K. would be an “agile, proactive partner” for tech firms, inviting them to develop their technology in the country.

However, Kyle expressed “regret” last week over the U.K. government’s communication regarding AI and copyright. The government’s preference for requiring copyright holders to “opt out” of AI model training caused controversy among artists and creative groups.

Meanwhile, OpenAI argued that an “opt out” model doesn’t sufficiently encourage AI investment in the U.K. and has also resisted transparency obligations for AI firms.

In November, Kyle suggested the U.K. should show “humility” and employ “statecraft” when dealing with U.S. Big Tech companies.

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and OpenAI have been contacted for comment.

What a brilliant display of “humility” from the UK—inviting tech giants to our shores while simultaneously tying their hands with copyright red tape.🤦‍♂️ It’s like asking a Michelin-star chef to cook with expired ingredients! 🍽️

Seems like the UK’s idea of being an “agile partner” is more like a wobbly partner after three pints—great intentions, but good luck with that communication! 🍻 #TechTalk

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “agile partner” like a committee brainstorming how to annoy artists and scare off investors. 🤦‍♂️ Let’s just throw a tea party and hope they come! 🍵😏

Just when you thought the U.K. was ready to roll out the red carpet for tech, turns out it was more of a budget runner—who knew “agile partner” meant “let’s trip over our own regulations”? 😂

Oh, splendid! The U.K. is an “agile partner” now—just like a tortoise in a marathon, eh? 🤷‍♂️ With all this “humility,” I half-expect them to start handing out tea and biscuits at tech meetings! ☕️🍪

Oh brilliant, nothing says “agile partner” quite like a government that gives creative folks the old heave-ho while begging Silicon Valley for a pat on the head. 🤦‍♂️ Just what we needed—a masterclass in how to turn a tech summit into a circus! 🎪

Just what we needed, an “agile” approach that somehow trips over its own feet! 🤦‍♂️ But hey, at least our tech policy is as clear as Yorkshire fog, innit?

Oh brilliant, nothing screams “let’s be a tech hub” like a budget meeting with Sam Altman and a side of regret over copyright! 🙄 Just what we need—more bureaucracy and less clarity, it’s like inviting a fox to guard the henhouse! 🐦💼

Isn’t it delightful how the UK is rolling out the red carpet for tech giants while fumbling the basics like communication? 🙄 Just what we need, an “agile” approach that feels more like a wobbly bicycle ride through a pothole-filled street! 🚴‍♂️💼

Oh, fabulous! Who knew being a “proactive partner” meant playing hard to get with copyright holders? 🤦‍♂️ Just what we need – more bureaucratic tango while the tech world dances on without us! 💃🕺

Oh brilliant, can’t wait for the U.K. to roll out the red carpet for Big Tech while tripping over its own feet on copyright—talk about a masterclass in ‘how to make friends and influence no one’! 🙄🧐

Oh brilliant, just what we needed—a tech secretary who thinks “being agile” means doing the cha-cha with copyright laws! 🕺💼 Can’t wait to see how that dance turns out…or if we’ll just be stepping on our own toes! 😂

Right, because what better way to charm tech giants than to throw a “please don’t use our stuff” sign at them? Classic British diplomacy—let’s hope they don’t bring the tea to drown their sorrows! 🍵😏
