“The general public is at very low risk from avian flu despite this confirmed case,” assured Susan Hopkins, Chief Medical Adviser at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). “We have robust systems to identify cases early and take necessary actions, as we are aware that occasional transmission from birds to humans can occur.”
The UKHSA noted that while bird-to-human transmission of the H5N1 avian influenza virus is rare, it has been documented on a few occasions in the United Kingdom.
In response to a growing number of cases in wild birds and numerous outbreaks at poultry farms, the country has recently intensified its surveillance and implemented stricter control measures to curb the spread of bird flu.
