Backlash Erupts Over Ex-Spanish PM’s Racist Remark About French World Cup Team

Fabien Roussel, leader of the French communist party, condemned Rajoy’s remarks, stating on X: “They reveal blatant racism aimed at provoking our French team!” Pierre-Alexandre Anglade, a centrist MP and European affairs committee head in the French National Assembly, labeled the comments “a grave insult to our French team and country.” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) remarked: “It is disgraceful that Mariano Rajoy, a former President of Spain, made such statements.” Rajoy also mocked the Spanish left and referenced Belgium’s team, the Red Devils, defeated by Spain. Rajoy, from the center-right Popular Party, led Spain’s government from December 2011 to May 2018. His comments follow Hebe Casado, deputy governor of Mendoza, Argentina, calling the French team “an African team, without manners” after France’s 1-0 win over Paraguay, leading to her being barred from the French Embassy in Argentina. Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla also hurled online abuse at France’s Kylian Mbappé, questioning his intelligence and French identity, labeling him a “colonized Cameroonian pretending to be French.” Amarilla’s statements elicited widespread condemnation in France, with Mbappé responding on X: “You are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position.”

Oh, look, another ex-leader trying to score points by throwing shade on the French team—what a refreshing strategy! Must be a new tactic in the Spanish playbook: distract the public with racist remarks while the real issues are kicking like a mule in the background. 😂

Typical Rajoy, taking a break from his siesta to serve up a side of racism with a dash of ignorance. Who knew being a former PM came with a PhD in foot-in-mouth syndrome? 😂

Looks like some folks are just itching for a little controversy to spice up their otherwise dull political careers, eh? 😂 Maybe they should stick to their day jobs instead of diving headfirst into the World Cup drama!

Seems like Rajoy took a masterclass in diplomacy from the school of foot-in-mouth! 😂 Maybe next time he should stick to discussing paella instead of poking the French bear. 🍷

Oh, brilliant move by Rajoy—because nothing screams “class” like a former PM tossing around xenophobic remarks like confetti at a fiesta! 🎉 Just what we needed for international relations, eh? 😏

Isn’t it lovely to see a former PM serving up a buffet of outdated clichés and racism? Makes you wonder if they teach that in Spanish politics 101. 😂

Oh, brilliant move, Rajoy! Nothing says “let’s unite through sport” quite like a sprinkle of racism and a dash of self-sabotage—truly, the hallmark of a seasoned politician 🥴. Must be hard to keep their foot out of their mouth when the World Cup buzz is on!

Seems like some folks need a crash course in diplomacy—who knew a former PM could serve up hot takes hotter than a paella on a July afternoon? 🇪🇸🔥

Seems like Rajoy’s taken a masterclass in how to alienate an entire nation while simultaneously proving that the football pitch isn’t the only place for a good ol’ brawl. 🎉 Who knew being a former PM came with a side of cringe? 🤦‍♂️

Seems like some folks are still stuck in a time warp, eh? Maybe they should take a good look in the mirror instead of throwing shade at a football team—talk about misplaced priorities! 😂⚽️

Looks like Rajoy’s taking a masterclass in diplomacy from the likes of a drunken taxi driver at 2 AM. Bravo! 👏 Who knew being a former PM meant you could still score own goals like that? 😂

Isn’t it charming how some politicians think they can spice up their careers by serving a heaping plate of racism? 🍽️ Bravo, Rajoy, now you’ve truly earned the title of ‘diplomatic chef’! 🤦‍♂️

Oh, just what we needed—ex-PMs throwing shade like it’s the Olympics. Seems like some folks are still playing in the kiddie pool of diplomacy, huh? 😂

Oh, brilliant! Nothing screams “classy diplomacy” quite like a former PM throwing shade at a football team while the rest of us are just trying to enjoy the match. 🙄 Maybe he should take a page from the manual on how to win friends and influence people – or at least stick to the usual banter about the weather! 🍻

Looks like Rajoy’s trying out for the role of ‘Most Unwanted Comedian’ – perhaps he missed the memo that not all jokes land, especially when you’re juggling national pride and a World Cup! 😂 #StickToPoliticsMate

Looks like Rajoy’s trying to win the “most out-of-touch remarks” award on a European scale! 😂 Maybe next time he should stick to tapas instead of commentary on football teams.
