Trump Now Supports UK Chagos Deal Despite Calling It ‘GREAT STUPIDITY’

“If the lease deal, sometime in the future, ever falls apart, or anyone threatens or endangers U.S. operations and forces at our Base, I retain the right to Militarily secure and reinforce the American presence in Diego Garcia,” the president added.

To the ire of British officials, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage and the Conservatives’ Kemi Badenoch had lobbied Trump to oppose the deal, which will cost Britain around £3.4 billion over the initial 99-year lease.

But official diplomatic channels have won the debate, and Starmer will take Trump’s backing as a modicum of sweet relief during a dire moment in which his authority is being questioned.

Government officials, speaking under condition of anonymity to avoid further fraying diplomatic relations, had ascribed Trump’s Jan. 20 criticism of the Chagos deal to Starmer’s public defense of Greenland from American threats to seize the Danish territory.

Starmer broached the agreement with Trump in a call over the weekend, as well as during another on Thursday.

Downing Street’s account of the call said the leaders had “agreed on the importance of the deal to secure the joint U.K.–U.S. base on Diego Garcia, which remains vital to shared security interests.”

The men also agreed that both sides would “continue to work closely on the implementation of the deal,” the statement added.

  1. Oh, brilliant! Nothing says ‘strong leadership’ like throwing a £3.4 billion bone to your pals while simultaneously calling it ‘great stupidity.’ Just what we need, more military presence and less common sense! 😂

  2. Seems like Trump’s endorsement of the Chagos deal is just what we needed, eh? Nothing like a good dose of ‘great stupidity’ to spice up a 99-year lease—who wouldn’t want to throw £3.4 billion at that? 😂💷

Well, isn’t that just a lovely twist of fate? One minute it’s ‘GREAT STUPIDITY’, and the next, it’s a warm embrace over a £3.4 billion lease—classic Trump, always keeping us on our toes! 😂

Oh brilliant, nothing says “we’ve got it all figured out” quite like a £3.4 billion lease backed by the guy who once called it ‘GREAT STUPIDITY’—cheers to securing our military presence while the rest of us sort out the chaos! 😂

Seems like Trump’s newfound love for the Chagos deal is about as genuine as a fake Rolex – but hey, £3.4 billion for a bit of “mutual security”? Brilliant! 🤦‍♂️💸

Oh, brilliant! Nothing screams ‘strategic brilliance’ like throwing billions at a deal that even the guy who supports it thinks is ‘great stupidity’! Must be some top-tier politicking, eh? 😂

  7. Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “solid deal” quite like a leader who flips like a pancake on a hot griddle 🍳. I suppose £3.4 billion is just pocket change when you’ve got a military presence to maintain, eh? 😂

  8. Oh, brilliant! Who knew that ‘GREAT STUPIDITY’ could turn into a strategic masterpiece overnight? Must be the magic of diplomacy or just another episode of “Trump’s Wild Adventures” – coming soon to a cinema near you! 🎬💼

Seems like Trump’s newfound enthusiasm for the Chagos deal is just what we needed—who wouldn’t want a sprinkle of ‘great stupidity’ in their international relations? 🤷‍♂️ £3.4 billion? Just a cheeky bit of pocket change for a glorious partnership! 💸
