The HumanRights4Prosperity Program in Action: A Global Initiative Succeeding in Guinea-Bissau

Empowering Women Through Human Rights: A Success Story in Guinea-Bissau

In June 2019, a training session focusing on the principles and application of Human Rights was conducted for 100 women in Guinea-Bissau. The primary objective of this initiative was to educate and politically empower women, encouraging their active participation in the country’s evolving democracy. By raising awareness of Human Rights values and strengthening their civic skills, the program successfully mobilized the participants. This effort culminated in the establishment of an agricultural cooperative, which expanded over the subsequent six years, significantly enhancing the women’s economic empowerment.

A Report by Murielle Gemis, Spokesperson for the HumanRights4Prosperity Program

While economic development and the promotion of Human Rights are often seen as separate objectives, the HumanRights4Prosperity program demonstrates that these goals can be seamlessly integrated to create meaningful and lasting impact. A prime example of this approach is taking shape in Guinea-Bissau.

Through a strategic collaboration between ONAMA (the women’s wing of the political party APU PDGB – Assembleia de Povos Unidos) and the AMD Quinara association, a transformative initiative was launched. Following a training session provided by HumanRights4Prosperity, women from both groups came together to establish an agricultural cooperative. The session saw the participation of not only 100 women but also 63 men, including members of the security forces. Inspired by the training, these women immediately took the first steps in creating an independent and sustainable project.

Impact on Local Communities

Today, this cooperative—managed and led by local women—has become a vital contributor to agricultural production, fulfilling the food needs of nearby communities. It currently supplies nine villages on the outskirts of Bissau, the capital, and has expanded its capacity to serve the entire southern region of the capital.

This initiative not only advanced women’s empowerment but also significantly boosted the local economy. The project serves as a powerful example of how integrating Human Rights principles can stimulate both social and economic development.

A Model for Transformation Through Human Rights

“The success of this cooperative clearly illustrates how understanding Human Rights can drive economic and social progress. We started with nothing, but by investing in education as a foundation for social change, we enabled the community to take control of its own future,” stated Murielle Gemis, spokesperson for HumanRights4Prosperity.

The HumanRights4Prosperity program is designed to integrate business and Human Rights principles, following the “protect, respect, and remedy” framework (NDUH, 2011). The program is tailored to fit the cultural and social realities of each region, enterprise, and state.

By offering specialized training and emphasizing social inclusion, the initiative encourages collaboration and promotes the creation of sustainable enterprises that fuse economic success with respect for Human Rights. However, embarking on such projects is not without its challenges—especially when starting from the ground up and adapting to local circumstances.

This is precisely what HumanRights4Prosperity aims to demonstrate: by customizing its strategies to specific contexts, viable projects can be established, placing Human Rights at the core of political and business decision-making. Rather than being a limitation, these principles act as a strong catalyst for economic and social transformation.

Embracing Human Rights is not just an ethical commitment—it is a powerful mechanism to drive sustainable economic growth and improve the well-being of communities.

A Scalable Model for Global Impact

The cooperative in Guinea-Bissau represents more than just an agricultural initiative—it is a symbol of transformation. It proves that embracing Human Rights values leads to tangible, measurable progress. This model, developed through collaboration, reveals that ethical prosperity is not an idealistic notion but a practical reality when people are prioritized.

The success of this project stands as a testament to the potential of the HumanRights4Prosperity approach. As the organization continues to expand its initiatives worldwide, this case highlights that sustainable development, rooted in Human Rights, is a promising path toward a more just and prosperous future.

The necessary tools and resources for this initiative were provided free of charge by the humanitarian campaign Youth for Human Rights.

Oh, fantastic! Nothing says “development” like teaching women their rights while simultaneously empowering them to grow tomatoes. Can’t wait for the next episode of “Bureaucracy Meets Gardening” – sounds riveting! 🍅✨
