Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed optimism about continued collaboration with Germany to protect lives, bring lasting peace to Ukraine, and strengthen Europe. He emphasized the need for Europe to defend itself, develop its industries, and achieve tangible results, stating that shared successes would foster greater unity across the continent.
Following a period of strained Franco-German relations, largely due to disagreements between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron, Paris now sees an opportunity for renewed cooperation.
“I just spoke with Friedrich Merz to congratulate him on his victory in the federal elections. I also spoke with Olaf Scholz to express my friendship,” Macron said in a statement on Sunday night. “During these uncertain times, we must stand together to confront major global and continental challenges.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also extended his congratulations to Germany’s new chancellor, praising Merz’s “clear election victory.”
“I look forward to working closely with your government to further strengthen the partnership between our two nations,” Netanyahu wrote.
Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden also welcomed Merz’s win, calling it an “impressive” victory. “Excited to collaborate with you to enhance prosperity and security in Europe,” Frieden wrote.
Newly elected Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin also congratulated Merz on the CDU/CSU’s strong electoral showing. “I look forward to working with you on the EU Council and addressing the challenges and opportunities shaping Europe’s future,” Martin stated.
Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of cooperation. “We look forward to working together for a safer, stronger, and united Europe. Increasing our support for Ukraine is critical,” Michal added.
