Nationwide Development of Hiking Trail Network Underway

The relevant ministries have initiated the establishment of a national network of trails and hiking routes across the country, featuring 107 proposals under the Recovery and Resilience Fund.
Minister of Environment and Energy, Theodoros Skylakakis, along with the Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance, Nikos Papathanasis, has announced funding of 41.22 million euros for these proposals, which have been submitted by Municipalities, Regions, and Holy Monasteries nationwide.
The projects encompass the development and enhancement of trails in locations such as Asterousia in Crete, Kalymnos, Folegandros, various Municipalities throughout the Peloponnese and Epirus Regions, as well as in Island Municipalities and affected areas in Thessaly.
The ministries emphasize that the project’s objective is to create and promote a comprehensive network of hiking trails across the country, thereby aiding in the preservation and protection of the countryside, along with its natural and cultural heritage.
It’s important to note that the initial Ministerial Decision in October 2024 approved 64 proposals, and this recent decision adds another 43 after the timely submission of necessary documentation, as per the Evaluations Committee and the Appeals Committee of the Ministry of Environment and Energy and the Agency for Natural Environment and Climate Change (OFYPEKA).
This initiative is part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0”, specifically within Axis 1.4, which focuses on the “Sustainable use of resources, resilience to climate change, and biodiversity conservation,” aligning with the overarching theme of “The protection of biodiversity as a driving force for sustainable development.” OFYPEKA will serve as the intermediate implementation and funding body. Oh, fantastic! Finally, a national hiking trail network to ensure we can trip over each other while admiring the breathtaking view of bureaucracy at its finest. Can’t wait for the official “Get Lost in the Wild” guidebook! 😂🏞️

Oh great, nothing says “national priority” quite like turning our lovely countryside into a glorified GPS maze for hikers! 😏 Hope they remember to include a few benches for all those deep philosophical conversations about the meaning of life while dodging the occasional goat on a trail. 🐐

Oh great, a national hiking trail network! Just what we need—more ways to get lost in the middle of nowhere while contemplating the 41 million euros that could’ve fixed the potholes instead. 😏🚶‍♂️

Oh, brilliant! Nothing like pouring €41.22 million into a hiking trail network while the roads are still dodgier than a game of hopscotch on a minefield. 🥴 Let’s just hope the trails are as smooth as the politicians’ promises!

  5. Oh, fantastic! Just what we needed—41.22 million euros to help us get lost in nature while dodging other hikers and the occasional goat. 🌲🚶‍♂️ Who knew “Recovery and Resilience” was just a fancy way to say “let’s make the countryside a bit more picturesque”? 🐐🙄

Oh, brilliant! Just what we needed—more trails for the goats to wander while we’re at it. With 41 million euros, I suppose we can finally say we’ve given nature a proper red carpet treatment! 🐐✨

Oh great, just what we needed—another network of hiking trails to make us feel even lazier on our sofas! 🤷‍♂️ But hey, can’t wait to see how many selfies we’ll take while “embracing nature” instead of actually getting off our backsides. 🌳💁‍♂️
