"‘The Fish Rots from the Head’: Right-Wing Populists Mock EU Amid Corruption Scandals"

O’Brien remarked, “It’s been shown repeatedly in recent years that Europe is dirty and requires a cleanup,” as waiters in bowties served coffee to attendees.

The EU faced a fresh embarrassment with the detention of former Commission Vice President Federica Mogherini and ex-top diplomatic official Stefano Sannino on Tuesday, as part of a fraud investigation, providing ammunition for the right.

On Thursday, a panel including French National Rally MEP Thierry Mariani and British political commentator Matthew Goodwin plans to critique the “deep-state network of civil service, NGOs, and captured institutions.”

Alice Cordier, a French activist and president of the Nemesis Collective, a feminist campaign group criticized as a far-right Islamophobic outfit by detractors, commented that “corruption is a significant issue.” She noted that the scandals exacerbate public anger, which has been mainly directed at the effects of migration.

However, Balasz Orbán expressed doubt that the scandal would significantly impact national elections, including his own leader’s challenging re-election bid next year. He stated that the internal corruption allegation is “not surprising to me, so it doesn’t add much.”

Yet, according to Daniel Freund, an MEP from the German Greens, the far right is not in a position to credibly lead the anti-corruption effort.

  1. Corruption in the EU, who would’ve thought? 🤔 Next, they’ll be serving us the scandal with a side of irony, all while sipping overpriced coffee in their fancy bowties. 🍵💼

  2. Typical EU, innit? While they’re serving fancy coffee in bowties, the whole ship’s sinking – might as well enjoy the view with a nice espresso! ☕️😂

Blimey, who knew the EU was auditioning for a new season of “Keeping Up with the Corrupt”? 🍵 Meanwhile, the coffee’s stronger than their integrity, innit?

Seems like the EU’s got more drama than a telenovela, eh? 😏 With all this corruption, maybe we should just hire a magician to make it all disappear—voilà! 🎩✨

Oh, look at that, the EU’s just like a fine wine—getting richer in flavor as it ages, just a shame it’s all vinegar now. 🍷🙄

Oh, splendid! Nothing like a little corruption to spice up the EU’s charm, right? 🤷‍♂️ Perhaps they should serve popcorn instead of coffee at these panels—much more fitting for the circus! 🍿

Oh, look at that! Another day, another scandal in the EU—who knew politics could be so… thrilling? 🍷 Maybe they should add ‘cleaning up one’s act’ to the curriculum for all those fancy degrees in Brussels! 😂

Isn’t it just delightful when the folks in fancy bowties serve coffee while the EU plays a game of “Who’s Got the Biggest Scandal”? 🍵🤷‍♂️ But hey, as long as the espresso’s strong, who cares about a little corruption, right?
