Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis held a meeting with Magnus Brunner, the European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, at the Maximos Mansion.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress made at the European level in establishing a new equilibrium in migration policy, focusing on protecting external borders, emphasizing the importance of returns, and enhancing legal migration pathways.
At the beginning of their discussion, the following exchange occurred:
Kyriakos Mitsotakis: Commissioner, welcome. I understand this is your inaugural trip abroad, aside from your prior visit to Poland. It is my pleasure to host you today. We have much to discuss, particularly since Greece has been at the forefront of the migration crisis for many years.
I am pleased with the developments in our collective European migration policy, particularly in safeguarding external borders, prioritizing returns, and improving legal migration routes.
There is a lot on our agenda, and I want to extend my congratulations once again on your appointment. I am confident our collaboration will be productive.
Magnus Brunner: Thank you for your warm welcome and your time. As you mentioned, this is indeed my first official visit abroad, aside from Poland. Greece plays a crucial role and is a valuable partner within the European Union, not only on migration and security issues but in many other areas as well. I appreciate your hospitality and all the efforts you’ve put forth.
We have a significant amount of work ahead, including the implementation of the Pact, and the returns issue is one that demands our attention. I remain hopeful, even though I am new to this role. The strong cooperation between Greece and the European Union is encouraging, as Greece has historically played an important role and will continue to do so. I look forward to our collaboration.
