Paris – On Monday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced via X that he has advocated for sanctions against those accountable for civilian abuses along the Alawite coast in Syria, though he did not elaborate further.
Tensions flared on March 6 in a largely Alawite village situated in Syria’s Latakia province, following the arrest of a wanted individual by security forces.
The situation escalated rapidly into armed clashes when members of the Alawite Muslim minority, viewed by authorities as loyal to Bashar al-Assad, began firing upon various security force positions.
In retaliation, civilians from the Alawite community, to which Assad belongs, became the targets of aggression.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), at least 1,476 civilians, predominantly Alawites, have lost their lives as a result of the violence.
The European Union is set to allocate nearly 2.5 billion euros in international aid to Syria over this year and the next. (March 17, 2025)
