Brussels – European diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas announced on X that “EU foreign ministers have reached an agreement on a roadmap to ease sanctions imposed on Syria.”
These sanctions were initially implemented against Bashar al-Assad’s government and various sectors of the Syrian economy amid the civil war.
The Syrian foreign minister, Assaad al-Chaibani, expressed approval of this decision, stating, “We welcome the EU’s positive step to suspend sanctions on Syria for one year, aiming towards their eventual removal.”
Al-Chaibani added, “We anticipate that this decision will positively affect all aspects of daily life for the Syrian people and promote sustainable development.”
The European Union is keen to assist in the rebuilding of the war-torn nation, with its new leaders frequently advocating for the lifting of these sanctions.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot emphasized on Monday that the sanctions’ removal would specifically impact the energy, transport, and financial sectors. (January 27, 2025)
