Stockholm – A troubling surge in violence has prompted a wave of arrests among young people in Sweden.
The right-wing government in Sweden is moving quickly to introduce legislation that would permit surveillance of children under the age of 15.
“It is abundantly clear that we do not have control over this wave of violence,” Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stated.
Throughout January, the country has experienced an average of one explosive incident per day. In response, the government convened an emergency meeting with the national council focused on combating organized crime this week.
Kristersson emphasized that the new law is “essential” for targeting those orchestrating bomb attacks and for combating the recruitment of minors through social media.
“Social media platforms are increasingly becoming recruitment grounds for youth, often in plain sight, before they shift to encrypted messaging services,” he remarked.
He also issued a stern warning to social media companies.
“We have repeatedly called for greater self-regulation and cleaning up of these platforms. If they do not take action, we will have no choice but to enforce Swedish laws to restrict their operations in this manner,” Kristersson warned.
Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer noted that the main objective is to push for stricter regulations on these platforms at the EU level.
Initially slated to go into effect on July 1, 2026, the law’s implementation date has now been advanced to October 1, 2025.
