Stockholm – In January, Sweden experienced an average of one explosion per day. The government asserts that to combat this surge in violence, illegal access to explosives needs to be restricted.
“Bombings, along with gun violence, represent the most severe manifestation of organized crime that threatens the system,” state Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer and Carl-Oskar Bohlin, Minister for Civil Defense, in a commentary published in Svenska Dagbladet.
The government’s primary focus is on implementing stricter controls, enhancing supervision within Sweden, and fostering greater collaboration at the EU level.
Currently, significant gaps exist in how municipalities oversee permits for handling explosive materials. In 2023, 3,750 permits for explosive goods were issued, yet only 352 inspections were conducted.
The government plans for the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency to take on a coordinating role for the permitting processes in municipalities. This agency will also oversee the municipalities’ permitting and inspection functions.
