Stapelstraat in Sint-Truiden Closed Due to 30cm Subsidence

Sint-Truiden (Eurotoday) – Stapelstraat in Sint-Truiden has been closed since June 29, 2025, due to a 30 cm road subsidence. Mayor Gert Stas says sewer issues or old water channels may be the cause.

As VRT News reported, the Stapelstraat, a busy road in Sint-Truiden, is closed. The road is closed because part of it is sinking. This road is between Beekstraat and Grote Markt. It has been closed since June 29, 2025.

They mentioned that the sewer system under the road is broken. The road started to fall apart, so they closed it. This is causing problems for drivers and shops. People who walk there are also affected.

Why is Stapelstraat in Sint-Truiden sinking 30 centimetres?

After the road closed, companies checked underground systems. Fluvius and De Watergroep looked for problems. They checked for gas and water issues. They used cameras and looked closely. They found no problems with gas or water.

They don’t know why the road is sinking. Officials mentioned that they need to study the sewer system more. The road will stay closed until they fix the problem. People should use different routes for now. The city is telling people how to go around the closure.

The mayor said it’s not as easy to figure out as they thought. The area has streets with names like “watercourse” and “drainage.” He mentioned that the ground might be unstable because of old water channels. These old channels could be the reason why the road is sinking.

The city is working to fix the road problem in Sint-Truiden. They will meet on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, with experts to talk about new studies. Officials mentioned that the goal is to find a lasting fix and stop it from happening again.

The city wants to find a solution before the summer break for construction. They will fix the damage first. Then, they will look at why it happened. The city wants to keep people and businesses informed as they work on the problem.

Oh, brilliant! Just what we needed, a 30cm sinkhole in the middle of Sint-Truiden. I suppose the mayor thought it was time for a new tourist attraction – “Come see the world’s smallest pothole!” 😂

Stapelstraat’s latest feature—a 30 cm dip—truly puts the “fun” in dysfunctional road maintenance, doesn’t it? 🚧 Maybe we should start charging tourists for the unique sinkhole experience! 😂

Stapelstraat’s taking a little ‘vacation’ it seems, just 30cm deeper into the earth! 🌍 Next time, maybe the mayor should consult a fortune teller instead of experts for a clearer picture of the situation. 😂
