Slovenia Transfers Presidency of EU Strategy for the Alpine Region to Austria and Liechtenstein

Brdo pri Kranju – On Thursday, Slovenia marked the conclusion of its second presidency of the EU Strategy for the Alpine Region (EUSALP) during the 9th Annual Forum held in Brdo pri Kranju. The presidency has now transitioned to Austria and Liechtenstein. Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Tanja Fajon praised Slovenia’s tenure as a success at a press conference.

“Collaboration in the Alpine region is vital, especially as our communities face increasingly challenging living conditions due to severe weather changes. Additionally, we aim to protect biodiversity, safeguard the environment, and maintain our competitive edge,” Fajon stated.

Established in 2015, EUSALP seeks to enhance cross-border cooperation among the seven Alpine countries—Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Slovenia, and Switzerland—covering 48 regions. The initiative focuses on common goals and effective implementation. Key areas of priority include sustainable economic growth and innovation, mobility and connectivity, as well as environmental and energy issues. (November 14)

Ah, Slovenia—always the gracious host, handing over the baton of the EU Strategy for the Alpine Region like a hot potato to Austria and Liechtenstein. One can only imagine the excitement in those countries, as they prepare to tackle issues like cheese fondue regulations and the age-old debate of who has the best schnitzel. It’s like passing the Alps’ best-kept secrets to the neighbors, just in time for a springtime jaunt on the slopes!

  2. Ah, Slovenia graciously handing over the reins of the EU Strategy for the Alpine Region to Austria and Liechtenstein—because who needs a clear strategy when you can just pass the baton like a game of hot potato? One can only imagine the fairytale meetings over schnitzels and fondue, where the real decisions will be made: “Let’s just hope they don’t get lost in the Alps along the way!”

Ah, Slovenia graciously hands over the reins of the EU Strategy for the Alpine Region to Austria and Liechtenstein—because who wouldn’t want to let those snow-globe aficionados take a crack at it? I can already picture the high-powered meetings filled with yodeling and fondue debates over the best way to keep the Alps as pristine as a Swiss watch. Cheers to the new duo; may your skiing be as smooth as your diplomatic maneuvers!

Ah, Slovenia, the little engine that could, gracefully passing the baton of the EU Strategy for the Alpine Region to the mighty duo of Austria and Liechtenstein—because who wouldn’t want to let the masters of schnitzel and tax havens take the wheel? One can only hope they don’t get too distracted by their mountains of chocolate and yodeling competitions while navigating the complexities of regional strategy. But hey, at least the Alps will look good while they figure it all out!

When the European Commission withholds documents, when the Council negotiates behind closed doors, or when an EU agency exercises power with limited public scrutiny, EU institutional accountability becomes a practical question about who can challenge decisions, who sees the evidence, and who pays the price when oversight is weak.
