Ljubljana – Slovenia endorses efforts to establish age limits at the EU level and enforce mandatory age verification for users of online platforms, including social networks and gambling services, according to the Ministry of Digital Transformation. The ministry considers 16 years the most suitable age for independent use of social networks.
The Ministry of Digital Transformation recognizes the various challenges and dangers that social networks pose for children and teenagers, which is why Slovenia advocates for age limit initiatives within the European Union and mandatory age verification for users.
The ministry asserts that age verification is crucial not only for social networks but also for sports betting, gambling providers, and content featuring pornography or violence, where accountability is currently ambiguous.
They also highlighted that on June 6 of this year, during the EU Council for Telecommunications meeting in Luxembourg, Slovenia backed a Spanish initiative aimed at enhancing the protection of minors from harmful online content and associated risks. Alongside Slovenia, Austria, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Greece, Croatia, Italy, and Slovakia also supported this initiative. Furthermore, Slovenia has aligned itself with a Greek proposal calling for a unified EU regulatory framework that mandates parental consent for minors to access platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat.
