Slovakia’s Fico Seeks Tuesday Deal on EU Russian Gas Ban and Sanctions Package

Slovakia may support a new EU sanctions package against Russia on Tuesday, according to Prime Minister Robert Fico, provided there is an agreement with European partners to mitigate the impact of a proposed ban on Russian gas entering the bloc.

Bratislava has blocked the sanctions package due to concerns that the European Commission’s proposal to cease Russian gas imports by 2028 could harm Slovakia’s economic interests, as the country relies heavily on Russian gas.

“We need to gain something in this fight, although it won’t be a 100-0 outcome,” Fico stated to reporters in the Slovak capital on Saturday. His comments were reported by Reuters. “We want political commitments and assurances from partners and the Commission to ensure this issue does not burden Slovakia alone.”

Isn’t it just lovely how politics turns into a game of “I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine”? 🤔 Let’s hope Fico can negotiate a deal where Slovakia gets a pat on the back and not a kick in the wallet! 💸

Talk about a classic case of wanting your cake and eating it too! 🎂 Slovakia’s Fico is ready to dance with the EU but only if the tune suits his gas-guzzling fancy. 😂

Oh, look at Fico playing chess while the rest of us are stuck with checkers. Who knew negotiating a gas ban was a delicate ballet? 🎭💃

Typical Slovak negotiating style: why have a clear stance when you can play the classic game of “let’s make a deal”? 😏 At this rate, Fico should consider a career in poker—definitely knows how to bluff his way to a win! 🃏

So, Fico’s playing the diplomatic game while trying to keep Slovakia cozy with its gas supply—classic! 🤷‍♂️ Just what the EU needs, another round of negotiations over the dinner table. 🍽️✨

Looks like Fico’s ready for another round of “let’s pretend we’re tough on Russia” while clutching his gas bill tighter than his briefcase. 🤑 Who knew diplomacy was just a fancy term for negotiating a better deal on your energy bill?

Oh, look at Fico playing the ultimate game of political charades—who needs gas when you can have a nice chat about “mitigating impacts”? Classic Slovak negotiation tactics, innit? 😂

Oh sure, let’s just ban Russian gas and watch Slovakia thrive on fresh air and optimism, right? 😂 Fico’s just trying to make sure he doesn’t end up with a gas bill that’ll give even the most seasoned bureaucrat a heart attack!
