Bratislava – On Wednesday, Peter Pellegrini, President of the Slovak Republic, urged the government to maintain close ties with EU partners and NATO allies in its global foreign policy initiatives. He made this statement during his address to the National Council of the Slovak Republic regarding the state of the nation, as reported by TASR.
The president highlighted the significance of the West for Slovak interests, asserting that it should remain a pivotal focus of the country’s foreign policy. He noted the substantial investments that Slovakia receives from the EU.
Pellegrini referenced a declaration made by the three highest constitutional officials concerning Slovak foreign policy, which affirmed Slovakia’s commitment to a sovereign foreign policy that is open to global engagement—an outlook he fully endorses.
“I must remind everyone that one of the four corners of the world remains the West, and it cannot be excluded from our foreign policy,” the president declared. He stressed that the West is not merely one of the four global regions but the most critical one for Slovakia.
Pellegrini pointed out that 89 percent of all foreign investments in Slovakia originate from the European Union, while 78 percent of Slovak exports are directed towards EU member states.
“The European Union serves as our economic, foreign policy, value-based, and increasingly security space, which we cannot forsake,” Pellegrini asserted. He added that the three constitutional officials have pledged to uphold Slovakia’s “undeniable” membership in the EU and NATO, as well as to support the country’s sovereign foreign policy stance, particularly regarding the enhancement of relations between EU member states and the North Atlantic Alliance.
