A spokesperson for the European Commission has confirmed that a planned meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico will be postponed, though no new date has been set.
Fico had also been scheduled to hold discussions with Dan Jørgensen, Europe’s Energy Commissioner.
Reflecting on the change in plans, Fico commented in a video posted on his Facebook page: “As usual, man makes up his mind and God changes his mind,” while traveling back to Bratislava.
The Slovak leader indicated that he intends to return to Brussels on Monday to participate in an informal European Council summit. Beyond engaging with EU leaders at the summit, Fico revealed plans to seek individual meetings with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Energy Commissioner Jørgensen, with a focus on brokering a gas agreement. “The issue is of enormous importance,” he emphasized.
Fico’s comments follow a week of tension after he had earlier referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as Slovakia’s “enemy” in relation to a gas transit dispute.
