Bratislava – The decision regarding the deployment of Slovak soldiers will not be made by bureaucrats in Brussels. This was asserted by the Minister of the Interior of the Slovak Republic and leader of Hlas-SD, Matúš Šutaj Eštok, in a social media video on Tuesday, highlighting Slovakia’s sovereignty and independence. His remarks were in response to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s statement about Europe preparing a “fairly detailed plan” for the deployment of multinational units to Ukraine as part of post-war security guarantees, as reported by TASR.
“I want to make it clear that Slovak soldiers will not go to Ukraine. As long as we are part of the government, such a decision will not pass through us, and we will not allow it,” emphasized Matúš Šutaj Eštok.
The minister expressed confidence that Slovak soldiers would defend their homeland with resolve in the event of an attack. However, he believes it is unacceptable for them to sacrifice their lives in Ukrainian trenches for foreign geopolitical interests.
The Hlas leader stated that the priority is to ensure the security of Slovakia and its citizens. “The future of Slovakia will be decided by the Slovak government and parliament. No one else will determine our fate, especially on matters that reside solely within our competence,” he asserted.
Ursula von der Leyen mentioned in an interview with the Financial Times that Europe is formulating a “fairly detailed plan” for deploying multinational units to Ukraine within the scope of post-war security guarantees. The potential deployment could involve tens of thousands of European soldiers, supported by the United States with command and control systems, intelligence, and surveillance capabilities. This agreement was reportedly reached during a meeting last month involving Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and representatives from European nations. (September 2)
