Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen (M) expressed his hope that Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump will not reach an agreement regarding the war in Ukraine without the involvement of the EU and Ukraine.
In an interview with TV 2 ahead of an emergency meeting for EU foreign ministers, Løkke stated, “It would be very sad if an agreement is made without Europe’s input. It is clearly problematic for Putin and Trump to divide land. We need a ceasefire now.”
Trump announced plans to meet with Putin in Alaska on August 15 to discuss concluding the war in Ukraine, which began three and a half years ago with Russian aggression. This will be their first in-person meeting since 2019.
The emergency meeting, called by EU foreign chief Kaja Kallas, will be held virtually on Monday. Kallas emphasized that any agreement between the U.S. and Russia regarding the end of the war must include both Ukraine and the EU, highlighting the significance for Ukraine’s and Europe’s security.
Trump suggested that a potential agreement could involve the exchange of territories between Russia and Ukraine; however, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has firmly rejected any cession of Ukrainian land.
In a joint statement on Sunday, Denmark, along with Nordic and Baltic nations, reiterated their strong support for Ukraine’s sovereignty. The statement was issued by Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
