Sint-Niklaas (Eurotoday) – The playground at Westerplein in Sint-Niklaas, previously contaminated with asbestos, has officially reopened following an extensive cleanup to ensure the safety of local children.
Local residents had repeatedly found asbestos debris scattered around the playground, prompting the city to intervene and initiate a thorough remediation process.
The hazardous debris was first noticed by several residents during the past summer. Tests later confirmed the material as bonded asbestos. However, authorities stated that the risk was minimal and that no asbestos particles had been found in the soil itself.
In response, the city cleared the area and brought in a professional environmental firm to inspect the site. Despite the initial approval from the inspection company, asbestos material was discovered again by residents shortly afterward.
This led the city to close the site once more and commission a specialized asbestos removal service. The cleanup entailed excavating around 30 centimeters of soil and replacing it with fresh, clean soil.
“A layer of soil of about 30 centimetres was dug up and new fresh soil was brought in,” stated Mayor Lieven Dehandschutter (N-VA).
With the comprehensive remediation completed, the playground has now been officially reopened for public use.
Why was the playground in Sint-Niklaas reopened after asbestos removal?
The reopening of the Westerplein playground followed the successful removal and containment of asbestos hazards, ensuring the area met all safety and health standards.
Authorities verified the site’s compliance with environmental regulations, confirming that any asbestos-containing materials had either been safely removed or encapsulated to prevent exposure.
This decision to reopen the site demonstrates the municipality’s commitment to maintaining safe public spaces, particularly for children and families, while also adhering to strict environmental protection standards.
