Groundwork commenced at the Ancoats site last month. The government has stated it will host approximately “8,800 individuals from various government departments focusing on digital delivery.”
Burnham did not specify a timeline for establishing “No. 10 North” or detail how many people it would involve. However, he mentioned it would address utility reform, regeneration, and reindustrialization in Britain, centralizing many powers currently held in Whitehall.
In a comprehensive interview, Burnham also criticized the whipping system in Westminster for “punishing” MPs and expressed his willingness to collaborate with opposition parties to address the issue of gangs, particularly in northern towns, grooming and sexually abusing young women.
Burnham faced accusations of avoiding scrutiny after not giving an extended interview for weeks. Even on Thursday, he was far from answering all questions.
When questioned about declaring a public holiday if England’s soccer team wins the World Cup, Burnham hesitated, suggesting it would be premature due to the challenging match against Mexico on Monday.
“We only beat… we struggled, let’s say,” he commented, a day after England narrowly advanced by securing a late 2-1 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo, led by team captain Harry Kane. “I think we might be getting ahead of ourselves.”
