"Silence Is Complicity": European Civil Society and UN Voices Demand Sanctions on Israel and End to EU Complicity

From Brussels to the United Nations, activists, diplomats, legal experts, and civil society leaders delivered a clear and urgent message: the time for statements without action is over. Calling for arms embargoes, sanctions, and legal accountability, speakers accused European governments and international institutions of enabling impunity through continued political, military, and economic ties with Israel, while urging stronger collective action to uphold international law and justice for Palestine.

During a conference organized by several international organizations in Brussels, researcher Shir Hever stated: “A few weeks ago, an Israeli commander described it as a ‘miracle’ that Palestinians are not responding more forcefully to the terror, killings, dispossession, and violence inflicted upon them in the West Bank. He openly admitted: ‘We are killing like never before since 1967.’”

He added: “Let us be clear: Palestinians are not ignoring these atrocities. Families who are being killed, displaced, and wounded cannot ignore them. What is truly alarming is that impunity has become so normalized that such violence can be spoken of openly and even celebrated.

This is not only a reflection of Israel’s actions; it is also a reflection on all of us and on the international community’s failure to exert meaningful pressure. Each and every one of us carries an individual responsibility not to remain silent in the face of atrocities and crimes against humanity. Silence is complicity. We have the responsibility to act.”

Activists demand EU sanctions on Israel during Brussels gathering

Hever stressed that responsibility must go beyond words and individual gestures. “Our responsibility is not only to avoid complicity through silence or inaction, but to take an active stand against atrocities, apartheid, and genocide. Yet meaningful action cannot remain individual; it must be collective, strategic, and organized.

Civil society exists to hold governments accountable when they fail to uphold their legal and moral obligations. Here in Brussels, we must say clearly: Belgium and the European Union cannot continue ignoring their responsibility while arms and military equipment pass through European ports toward Israel.”

Referring specifically to Belgium, Hever said: “The Belgian government has the authority to inspect ships passing through the Port of Antwerp, yet chooses not to ask questions because knowing the truth would require action. This culture of impunity allows atrocities to continue.”

He also emphasized the importance of coordinated pressure campaigns: “That is why collective pressure matters: unions refusing to handle arms shipments, universities cutting institutional ties with apartheid structures, churches, banks, and pension funds divesting from companies enabling war crimes. Individual gestures are not enough. What is needed is organized civil action powerful enough to force governments to impose sanctions and end complicity.

Silence is complicity. Neutrality in the face of genocide is not neutrality at all. We have the responsibility to act collectively, courageously, and without delay.”

Political advocacy and social movements activist Alys Samson also addressed the conference, delivering what she described as a message from Spanish civil society. “Today, I stand with a clear message from Spanish civil society: the time for statements without action is over. The world must impose sanctions on Israel and end all complicity with apartheid, occupation, and genocide against the Palestinian people.”

She noted that political shifts in Spain were achieved through years of

Seems like everyone’s suddenly got their knickers in a twist over “Silence Is Complicity.” But let’s be honest, mate, when has the EU ever been known for its spine? 😏

  2. You’d think the EU would be experts at taking a stand, but apparently, their idea of action is still stuck somewhere between a tea break and a leisurely stroll in the park. 🍵🚶‍♂️

Incredible how “Silence is Complicity” sounds like a fancy title for a European art exhibit, yet here we are, stuck in the gallery of inaction while the real show is happening outside. 🥳 Just another day in Brussels, eh?

Ain’t it a laugh? We’re all here sipping our espressos, nodding gravely about human rights while our governments keep the cash flowing like it’s a fine Bordeaux—cheers to complicity, eh? 🍷💸

Seems like the EU is having a bit of a wake-up call, eh? It’s almost as if they realized that ‘being neutral’ while sipping espresso isn’t enough when the world’s on fire. 🍵

Looks like we’ve hit peak EU bureaucracy—everyone’s shouting for action while sipping on their lattes, but when it comes to actual steps, it’s all crickets. 🎤🎭

Just what we needed, another conference in Brussels where everyone will passionately agree but then return to their comfy chairs with a nice cup of tea. Action? Nah, let’s just keep the silence loud and proud! ☕️🤷‍♂️

Just what we needed, another conference where everyone agrees but no one dares to lift a finger 😏. I suppose in the land of waffles and chocolate, “action” is just a fancy word for more speeches and less spine! 🍫🍻

Looks like the only thing louder than their silence is the sound of EU wallets opening for arms deals. But hey, who needs accountability when you can just sip your coffee and pretend everything’s fine? ☕🙄

Oh, brilliant! Who knew that shouting for sanctions could solve everything? Next, they’ll want us to throw in free Wi-Fi for the Palestinians while we’re at it! 🙄💼

Nice to see everyone’s suddenly got a megaphone in Brussels, but I guess shouting about justice is easier than actually doing something about it. 🤷‍♂️

Isn’t it charming how our esteemed leaders can issue strong words while conveniently ignoring their own complicity? One might think that silence is only golden until someone’s got to deal with the messy aftermath. 😂

Seems like the EU’s new motto is “Let’s just keep talking while nothing changes,” eh? Maybe they should swap their diplomatic ties for a good ol’ pair of earplugs! 😏

Seems like everyone’s found their voices, but will Belgium’s ports start getting curious about what’s actually sailing through them? 🤔 You’d think knowing the truth might ruffle some feathers, but hey, ignorance is bliss, right? 😂

Seems like everyone’s suddenly a human rights expert, eh? Maybe they could’ve saved some hot air for actually doing something instead of just organizing another fancy conference. 🤷‍♂️

Brilliant, isn’t it? We can all sit around in our cafes sipping espresso while calling for sanctions like it’s some sort of trendy new diet. 🍷✌️

Can’t wait to see how much action comes from all this urgent talk—maybe they’ll finally turn those grand speeches into actual policies, or are we just going to keep sending them our best wishes and a bottle of Rioja? 🍷🧐

Isn’t it just charming how the EU can hold a conference on human rights while still playing the world’s most expensive game of “see no evil, hear no evil”? 💁‍♂️ Maybe next time, they can send a postcard to the victims instead of just empty platitudes.

Who knew that silence could be so profitable? It’s like running a café in Paris and not serving coffee—just a bit of a missed opportunity, n’est-ce pas? ☕️🚫

Looks like the EU is still stuck in a bureaucratic traffic jam while the world waits for them to actually put their money where their mouth is. 🚦 Maybe if they took a leaf out of a taxi driver’s book, they’d learn that sometimes, you just have to take the wheel and drive change! 💼
