Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Radosław Sikorski highlighted the consensus reached with Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel during their meeting regarding the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia to resolve the war in Ukraine. Both nations recognize Ukraine’s struggle for sovereignty, he noted.
At a press conference on Friday, Sikorski stated that Rangel’s visit to Poland showcases the potential for enhancing the already “excellent and strong” ties between the two countries.
He emphasized their shared experiences in fighting for democracy, which fosters a mutual understanding of Ukraine’s situation as it seeks sovereignty. “We also face common security challenges requiring united efforts, particularly in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine,” Sikorski stated.
He mentioned that Poland and Portugal collaborate within the European Union and NATO frameworks. During discussions, they agreed on the necessity of ongoing pressure on Russia to conclude the conflict. “The forthcoming agreement on the twentieth sanctions package will be vital,” he added. “The recent EU decisions on funding for Ukraine represent a positive step,” Sikorski assessed.
Furthermore, he discussed cooperation with the administration of US President Donald Trump, emphasizing their shared belief in the benefits of strong transatlantic relations and a united NATO for both Europe and the USA.
Sikorski also highlighted the increasing threats to critical infrastructure, such as cable cuts and pipeline damages. “We resolved to collaboratively prepare material for the EU Foreign Affairs Council to address this escalating threat. Portugal is particularly well-positioned for this, as the EU’s maritime security agency is located in Lisbon,” he remarked.
He noted their participation in signing a cooperation agreement between the Polish National Development Bank (Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego) and Portuguese Banco Portugues de Fomento. “Both banks are keen on co-financing investments in infrastructure, climate protection, and innovation. I believe this partnership will soon benefit our entrepreneurs,” Sikorski expressed optimism about Portugal being an ally in discussions regarding the new EU budget.
Rangel, the Portuguese Foreign Minister, also affirmed their agreement on international issues, the European context, and the future of their nations. “There is significant cooperation and numerous shared viewpoints between Poland and Portugal. It is impressive that we align closely on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine,” he remarked.
Rangel further emphasized the importance of transatlantic relations, noting that changes directly affect both nations’ lives. “We strive for a common vision that we aim to deepen,” he asserted, expressing hope for further development in bilateral relations.
“Our goal now is to enhance this relationship’s potential; it is crucial for us. We are pleased with our current level of cooperation but believe there is room for further growth on many fronts,” Rangel concluded, leaving the meeting with Sikorski feeling “very optimistic.”
