“We must consider everyone’s perspective before reaching a final decision,” warned an EU official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Several EU countries have proposed sanctions against Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir for his taunting of activists detained while attempting to breach Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza in May. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized Ben-Gvir after a video of the incident was released, stating the minister’s actions were “not in line with Israel’s values and norms.”
“The European Council condemns the abuse of detainees following the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters,” states the draft. “It urges the Council to work on restrictive measures against extremist ministers inciting and promoting such violations of human rights.”
Ben-Gvir has previously been sanctioned by the U.K., Canada, Australia, Norway, and New Zealand due to his statements about Palestinians.
