Sharp Rise in Homelessness Across Brussels

A recent report by Bruss’Help has revealed that 2,649 individuals—accounting for 27 percent of the counted population—are living in non-traditional housing situations. These include unauthorized shelters, makeshift accommodations, and squats. Additionally, 1,539 people, or 16 percent of those surveyed, are residing temporarily with third parties.

Bruss’Help emphasized that “the scale of the problem exceeds all individual initiatives,” expressing hope that the findings will guide policymakers toward more effective, sustainable, and compassionate public policy solutions.

This biennial study, conducted with the support of volunteers, provides crucial insights into the scope and nature of homelessness throughout the region. A more in-depth qualitative report is expected to be released in June.

Just splendid! Who knew that living in a cardboard box could be the latest trend in Brussels? 🌍💼 Maybe we should add “luxury squatting” to the tourism brochure! 😂

Oh, brilliant! Just what we needed—over a quarter of our lovely population trying out the ‘squat life’ while the policymakers sip their lattes and brainstorm solutions with all the urgency of a three-legged tortoise. 🐢☕ Let’s see if June brings us anything more than a fancy report and a dose of good intentions!

Oh, fantastic! Nothing says “Brussels charm” quite like 27% of the population finding new ways to redefine ‘home sweet home.’ Maybe we should just start handing out trophies for creativity in non-traditional living spaces! 🏆😏

Isn’t it lovely how Brussels has turned into a real-life “Where’s Waldo?” game, with nearly 2,649 people expertly dodging traditional housing like it’s a sport? 🏆 Let’s just hope the policymakers can pull their heads out of the clouds and do something about it before the next biennial report becomes a sequel no one wants to watch! 😂
