Britain has previously imposed sanctions on several Israelis implicated in settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. Additionally, the U.K. has called for a cease-fire in Gaza as Israel continues its bombardment of the region following the October 7 attacks by Hamas.
Michael Barber, who already serves as an unpaid advisor to U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer on “effective delivery,” has now taken on a new role as an envoy. Barber will handle the envoy position while maintaining his current advisory duties. Known for his expertise in government efficiency, Barber has also worked under Conservative administrations, conducting reviews for former prime ministers such as Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak.
Prime Minister Starmer announced Barber’s appointment during his trip to the Middle East. On Monday, Starmer met with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman as part of the visit. Originally intended to boost trade and investment ties, the trip has coincided with the pivotal collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria.
