Kyiv (Eurotoday) – In the deadliest aerial assault since the beginning of the conflict, Russian forces launched an unprecedented barrage of 367 missiles and drones on Ukrainian territory overnight, targeting cities across the country including Kyiv. The onslaught left at least 12 people dead and many more injured, according to government authorities.
As reported by the BBC, the strike was the second large-scale attack in just two days and came shortly after one of the most devastating offensives on the Ukrainian capital since the start of the Kremlin’s wider invasion.
How did Zelensky respond to the overnight bombardment?
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky released a statement on Sunday morning describing the attack as “massive” and confirmed that emergency crews were at work in over 30 cities and towns nationwide.
“Russia is dragging out this war and continues to kill every day,”
he said.
“The world may go on for a weekend, but the war continues despite weekends and weekdays. This cannot be ignored.”
Kyiv continues to urge its allies to ramp up pressure on Moscow, calling for stronger actions to bring about a ceasefire.
“Without really strong pressure on the Russian leadership, this cruelty cannot be stopped,”
he emphasized, renewing calls for additional sanctions. He added,
“America’s silence will only encourage Putin.”
What damage did the 367-missile assault cause?
Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that strikes affected 13 regions, injuring approximately 70 people. The assault led to damage across 80 residential buildings and sparked 27 large fires.
“This was a mixed, severe strike aimed at civilians. The opponent once again demonstrated that its purpose is dread and death,”
he said.
How is the Ukrainian defence handling increased attacks?
Ukraine’s air force reported the interception of 45 cruise missiles and the neutralization of 266 drones. Air strikes hit 22 different locations across the country.
This latest assault followed another major attack just one day earlier, during which Russia launched 14 ballistic missiles and 250 drones. While Kyiv was a primary target, other regions also suffered strikes.
Ukrainian defense systems intercepted six missiles over Kyiv and successfully neutralized 245 drones through a combination of anti-air missile systems and electronic countermeasures. In Kyiv alone, 15 people were injured, including two children, with the Obolon district among the hardest hit by fires and structural damage.
