Russia Initiates Large-Scale Air Strikes on Ukraine Before Christmas

After Russia dismissed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s appeal for a Christmas ceasefire last week, Zelenskyy cautioned that Moscow is planning extensive assaults during the holiday season.

“The military must pay direct attention, protect as best they can — it’s not easy due to a shortage of air defense [equipment], unfortunately. People need to be extremely attentive these days, because these ‘comrades’ may strike: nothing is sacred,” Zelenskyy stated in a Telegram post on Monday evening.

The attacks on Tuesday morning injured five people in Kyiv, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of the local military administration. In the Kyiv region, one person died and three were injured, as confirmed by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. An additional casualty occurred in the western Khmelnytskyi region.

In the nearby Chernihiv region, first responders were tackling fires caused by drone attacks that persisted all night.

In the Odesa region, previously hit by Russian attacks on Dec. 13 that resulted in power outages for thousands, was targeted again on Tuesday morning. The Russian strikes affected over 120 buildings, along with energy and port infrastructure, including a civilian vessel, the State Emergency Service reported.

In the western Zhytomyr region, Russian drones injured six people, said Governor Vitaly Bunechko in a Telegram post. Later, authorities disclosed that a child had died in the attack.
