Exiled former Syrian President Bashar Assad has reportedly arrived in Moscow, according to Russian state media on December 8, citing sources within the Kremlin.
Assad fled Syria after opposition forces took control of the capital, Damascus, earlier on Sunday. His nearly 25-year rule was marked by a brutal civil war that dominated the second half of his tenure.
Russia’s TASS news agency has reported that Assad, along with members of his family, has been granted asylum in Moscow on humanitarian grounds. The move underscores the close ties between Russia and the Assad regime over the years.
Additionally, TASS stated that Russia is advocating for future discussions regarding Syria’s political future to occur under the framework of the United Nations.
