Russia and Ukraine Agree on Prisoner Swap, First Since October

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that a prisoner exchange, the first in five months, took place on Thursday.

“We are bringing our people home — 157 Ukrainians. Warriors from the Armed Forces, National Guard, and the State Border Guard Service. Soldiers, sergeants, and officers. Along with our defenders, civilians are also returning. Most of them had been in captivity since 2022,” Zelenskyy said in a post on X.

Russia also received the return of 157 of its prisoners of war.

The last prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine was in October when the sides swapped 185 soldiers and 20 civilians.

Zelenskyy explained that Moscow had halted the swaps. “They are not particularly interested in exchanging people because they do not feel that it gives them anything. They believe it benefits us. But I think they should also be thinking about their own people — their own soldiers,” Zelenskyy told reporters in Kyiv last week.

Since Kyrylo Budanov, former head of Ukrainian military intelligence, joined the negotiating group, Russia began to take the negotiations more seriously, Zelenskyy said last week. “I believe it was a higher-level delegation than before, considering what the people who represented Russia this time are responsible for. We saw this as a more serious opportunity for discussion,” Zelenskyy said.

Oh brilliant, a prisoner swap after five months—nothing like a little game of musical chairs to keep the morale up, eh? 🎶 157 back home, 157 back to the borscht line—who knew diplomacy could be so… efficient? 😏

Looks like after a five-month radio silence, they finally remembered that swapping prisoners is a thing – maybe the first step towards a proper tea and biscuits negotiation? 😂

So, a prisoner swap after five months? What a novel concept! Guess it’s easier to share your toys when you’re both playing in the same sandbox, eh? 😂

Finally, some progress—157 prisoners swapped like they’re trading football cards. Maybe next time they’ll throw in a few rare ones for good measure! 😂

Typical, innit? After months of silence, they suddenly remember how to play nice—guess the weather in Moscow turned a bit too chilly for their liking. 🤷‍♂️

  7. A prisoner swap? Well, I suppose it’s nice to know they still remember each other’s names after all this time. Maybe next they’ll exchange recipes for borscht while they’re at it. 😂

Well, look at that! A prisoner swap after five months—who knew negotiating could be so tricky? It’s like trying to get a taxi in rush hour, except this time it’s not just your patience that’s on the line! 🚕🤷‍♂️

Will the EU Choose Cigarettes or Innovation?

When Jonas Salk developed the polio vaccine in 1955, health authorities did not restrict its use over concerns it might “renormalize injection.” Similarly, regulators did not ban antiretroviral therapy for HIV out of concern that patients might neglect abstinence.
