Bucharest – Romania’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is backing the activities of Black Sea fishermen by funding the modernization and expansion of the Midia port’s fishing infrastructure in Constanța County. The General Directorate of Fisheries – Management Authority for the Operational Program for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs (DGP AM POPAM) is overseeing a total financial allocation of 9,282,910 euros for this initiative.
Enhancing the infrastructure of this multifunctional port will significantly improve fishermen’s operations by facilitating the landing and market preparation of catches from marine and inland waters, while also ensuring product quality and enabling more efficient monitoring of fishing activities and data collection, thereby contributing to sustainable fishing in the region.
The Operational Program for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs (POPAM) 2021-2027 is financed by the European Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Fund (FEPAM), one of five European Structural and Investment Funds (ESI) designed to promote economic growth and job recovery in Europe. FEPAM aims to bolster the common fisheries policy (CFP), the EU maritime policy, and international commitments related to ocean governance, particularly in alignment with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
For the 2021-2027 programming period, Romania has been allocated a total of 232,072,724 euros for this program, with the EU contribution amounting to 162,450,905 euros.
The program’s implementation seeks to foster: the development of sustainable marine and inland commercial fishing; competitive aquaculture that makes efficient use of available resources; organization within the fishing market, which includes strengthening fishing organizations and supporting short marketing chains; and the development of fishing areas that leverage opportunities in the sustainable blue economy.
