PVDA Tongeren-Borgloon’s "Empty Shoes" Donates Toys to Two Groups

Tongeren-Borgloon (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – PVDA Tongeren-Borgloon’s “Empty Shoes Campaign” collected toys for the 2nd year, donating gifts to Gastama and Connect2Shine. Peter Vandevelde, Ivo Cauberghe, and Sonja Hiemeleers led distribution.

As VRT News reported, for the 2nd year in a row, the Tongeren-Borgloon PVDA, in the province of Limburg, Belgium, organised its “Empty Shoes Campaign” to bring gifts to children during the holiday season.

People donated toys through neighbours, family, and colleagues. Many others responded after seeing the call on Facebook. Peter Vandevelde of PVDA Tongeren-Borgloon said the collection included cuddly toys, picture books, puzzles, board games, and remote-controlled cars. The collected gifts are now being given to 2 local charitable associations.

What gifts did PVDA Tongeren-Borgloon collect for children this holiday?

One of the organisations receiving gifts from the PVDA’s “Empty Shoes Campaign” is Gastama. The name comes from Esperanto and means “hospitable.”

“In Tongeren, we take in refugees who are referred to us by the Public Centre for Social Welfare (OQMW), for example,”

explains Ivo Cauberghe.

“On Monday, the toys will be distributed to those in need through our volunteers.”

The 2nd organisation benefiting from the campaign is Connect2Shine, which operates in Bilzen-Hoeselt. Connect2Shine helps people living in poverty by providing donated items.

“These can range from clothing to bathroom or kitchen utensils and so on,”

explains Sonja Hiemeleers.

“The PVDA (Workers’ Party of Belgium) chose our organisation to give children in poverty a nice Sinterklaas gift. We’re distributing the toys at Sint Deelplein in Bilzen.”

The Workers’ Party of Belgium is also known by the acronym PVDA. It has been around since 1979, and it came out of the labour and socialist movements that began in the 1970s. Since then, they have focused on creating local community projects to support those in need. A recipient of donations from the “Empty Shoes” campaign, GASTAMA was started in 1999 and became a registered non-profit organisation in 2006.

Oh, look at that, PVDA’s “Empty Shoes” campaign is back for another round of holiday feels—because nothing says “giving” like a room full of toys collected from your mates. I mean, who wouldn’t want to donate a cuddly toy to distract from the real issues, right? 🎁😏

Not sure what’s more impressive: the number of toys collected or the fact that someone thought “Empty Shoes” was a catchy campaign title. Guess it’s a step up from “Shoeless in Tongeren”! 😂🥿

Donating toys through the “Empty Shoes” campaign, eh? Next, they’ll be asking us to donate our socks for the cause—because who doesn’t want to feel charitable while freezing their toes off? 😂

Who knew empty shoes could carry so much weight? 🤔 It’s almost as if the PVDA is trying to turn a holiday tradition into a charity fashion statement—next year, I expect them to don the shoes themselves! 😏🎁

  9. Just what we needed—more toys to keep the kids entertained while their parents wonder how to pay the heating bill! 🎁🙄 Who knew “Empty Shoes” would turn into such a festive charity racket?

  10. Looks like the “Empty Shoes Campaign” is just another fancy way to say “let’s play Santa for a day” – because nothing says holiday spirit like a charity event with more photo ops than actual toys! 🎅✨

Oh, how generous of them to fill empty shoes with toys instead of just, you know, actual shoes. I suppose it’s the thought that counts—just don’t trip over the irony! 😏👟

Oh, look at them playing Santa, collecting toys like it’s a competition for the best charity award! 🎅 Just what we need – more cuddly toys for kids when the real gifts would be a decent education or a job, innit? 🙄

Donating toys to kids in need, how utterly original! Next, they’ll be telling us they’re planning to host a ‘charity bake sale’ at the local pub – because nothing says “progressive politics” like a soggy sponge cake, right? 🎂😉

  15. Donating toys to needy kids? How avant-garde, just like serving croissants at a Belgian beer festival. 🎉 Guess they’re really stepping up the “giving” game—next, they’ll be dropping off gourmet chocolates in empty shoes! 🍫👟
