Syria’s regime, led by Bashar al-Assad and long aligned with Iran and Russia, has ruled the country with an authoritarian grip for nearly 25 years. Throughout the civil war, which began in 2011, Assad’s government has been accused of widespread human rights abuses, including the use of chemical weapons against civilians.
Russian ambassador to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, announced news of Assad’s presence in Moscow through a post on X (formerly Twitter). “Breaking news! Bashar al-Assad and his family in Moscow. Russia does not betray friends in difficult situations,” Ulyanov wrote in his statement.
Meanwhile, European leaders have expressed approval of what they see as the downfall of the Assad regime, which has faced accusations of devastating civilian areas, detaining innocent people arbitrarily, and employing torture on a mass scale in its infamous prison system.
